THE REF, Transportable High-End Rider Education Facility, is Wisconsin’s new motorcycle safety program. Federally funded, THE REF provides demo motorcycles, motorcycle simulators, and interactive tests to educate new and experienced riders about motorcycle safety. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation will be taking THE REF to dozens of cities across the state to raise awareness of motorcycle safety.

THE REF was introduced in August 2010, and so far motorcycle-related deaths have decreased. At this time last year, there were 62 motorcycle fatalities. Today, there are 16 fewer fatalities. State law does not require motorcyclist 18 years or older to take motorcycle training classes, but the Department of Transportation hopes that THE REF will encourage riders to take an active role in their safety.
