Drivers in Wisconsin whose cars become damaged because of potholes may have more difficulty receiving payment for their damages because a new bill has been introduced in the legislature that would prevent cities from being held liable for such claims.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Andre Jacque, who says that the money that cities save by not having to pay out liability claims would allow them to spend money fixing road defects. However, opponents of the bills, like Brown County’s Risk Manager Barb West, say that the bill would allow city officials to become negligent in their repairing of roads.

Under Wisconsin’s current law, drivers can file claims against the city for up to $50,000 for pothole damage.
