Driver error at fault in possible mechanical failure related accident

A 76-year-old woman who crashed into the Sheboygan Falls YMCA last week has been found at fault for the accident, as opposed to mechanical defects in her car braking system.

She was driving a Toyota Camry, a car model that has recently been recalled for various mechanical issues. While it was at first plausible that the woman’s crash may have been a result of a brake problem with the Camry, investigation of surveillance tapes and the scene of the accident have left police confident that the crash was a result of driver error.

Surveillance video shows the 76-year-old woman driving the Camry at a steady rate of speed into the side of the building without attempting to apply the brakes, as she had initially claimed.

“We are still waiting — and I stress this is not a final conclusion — but up ’til this point I feel comfortable saying our belief right now is that this is an operator issue,” Sheboygan Falls Public Safety Chief Steven Riffel said.
