Senior Citizen Drivers Pose Risk for Pedestrians

The number of elderly drivers has increased significantly over recent years, as the baby boomer generation has grown older, and this could pose a problem for pedestrians on the streets.

In a study that was conducted by a college, it was found that drivers over the age of sixty-five were only able to recognize and react to half of the external stimuli, including pedestrians and roadway hazards, that were presented to them. In addition to this, it was found that it takes more time for an elderly driver to react to pedestrians and put on their brakes, which is why they must drive at a speed that is, on average, twenty percent lower than the speed limit.

The study was conducted using driving simulator tests.
