Driver of fatal crash gets unusual sentence

A 20 year-old woman who caused a fatal car crash has been sentenced to a staggered jail sentence. For the next 10 years, she must serve 3 days in jail on the anniversary of the car accident. She is currently serving 30 days in jail for the first year, and 3 days for the next 9 years. She is also required to do 300 hours of community service.

The woman pled guilty to a felony count of criminal vehicular homicide and a gross misdemeanor charge of criminal vehicular homicide. The accident, which happened in July of 2010, killed a 39 year-old man. She says she was sleepy at the time of the accident; drugs or alcohol were not a factor. The woman rear-ended the man’s car, forcing him to hit a semitrailer rig, slicing his car in two pieces.
