Shawano sees first fatal car accident since 2003

Shawano had its first fatal auto accident in nine years this past Saturday morning.

The victim was 95-year-old Hazel Paulson. She was a passenger in a car going south on S. Union St. when the accident occurred.

The Shawano Police Department believes the woman driving her, Carole Scharr, failed to yield to another car, resulting in the deadly collision.  They concluded that neither alcohol nor drugs played a role in the accident, but there are many reasons a driver may fail to yield right of way, including being distracted.

Paulson was flown to Neenah’s Theda Clark Medical Center shortly after the accident, where she later passed away from her injuries. Our deepest condolences go out to Hazel Paulson’s family and friends.
