Washington “Click It or Ticket” Campaign

An annual campaign for road safety in the U.S., “Click It or Ticket,” launches Memorial Day weekend and ends June 2. This campaign is an initiative to promote the use of seat belts among motorists.

Washington Traffic Safety Commission communications consultant Erica Holmes said that the campaign is intended to send a strong message on the dangers of not wearing a seat belt and minimizing the use of cellphones while on the road.

Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood said Washington has the highest national seat belt usage rate at 97.5 percent and that the Washington Traffic Safety Commission spends around $600,000 on the campaign yearly, with ticket proceeds going to local police agencies.

California Office of Traffic Safety assistant director of marketing and public affairs Chris Cochran said the 600 highway signs informing drivers of the $162 ticket fine are enough to persuade people to buckle up.
