Legislation to increase seat belt fines not projected to be successful

A bill written to raise the penalty for not wearing a seat belt from $10 to $25 was discussed on Tuesday, February 25. With only a few more days left in the legislative session, it is not expected to be passed as a law.

An investigation conducted by a Wisconsin media outlet revealed that the state’s seat belt program isn’t overly effective in encouraging passengers and drivers to wear their seat belts.

According to Appleton police records, 917 $10 tickets were written in 2013, a significant drop compared to 2012’s 1,228 tickets, due to less grant funding.
